Perkins 14 Trailer

PERKINS' 14, currently in post production in NYC, is the first feature film to be developed entirely over the Internet. What a year ago may have been a YouTube sensation might now be a box office success. Produced by After Dark Films, and Massify in association with FanLib, PERKINS' 14 will be distributed in theatres nationwide (January 2009) as part of the third After Dark Horrorfest. Today the trailer has hit the net and you can check it out below. Personally I was hoping for much more but I do like the logline: This time horror fans, the blood is on your hands.

Directed by award winning filmmaker Craig Singer (Dark Ride, Dead Dogs Lie, A Good Night to Die), with a screenplay by Lane Shadgett (Luna Park, All Lost Souls), PERKINS' 14 was developed online at Massify.com. Writers were invited to upload story pitches, and actors submitted audition videos. The site's community members then voted on their favorite story and on which actors they thought deserved to be cast in the four main roles. The winning idea, submitted by Jeremy Donaldson, follows Robert Perkins, who at age six, becomes mentally unstable when his parents are brutally murdered inside their home. His psychosis has him living the rest of his life convinced that the killers will return in the future to kill him as well. At age 34, Perkins kidnaps 14 people from his hometown of Stone Cove and brainwashes them, creating a unified team of psycho killers.

Tailed by a mysterious creature, he must continue through this strange and fantastic world. Enclosed, Tolbiac has no other option to reach the surface than to use REZO ZERO, secret observing cells in this cemetery-like abandoned mine. He embarks upon this journey guided by the roots of a plant, leading the way and the main subject of attention of the REZO.

This is the story of the rise of a forgotten man, sometimes informed by the archives of abandoned laboratories, which punctuate this subterranean network and at other times by his own strangely amplified instinct. During his search for the surface, Tolbiac must uncover the secret of what once lived in this network; but has this “mystery” truly left?

'House of Night', Latest Vampire Series Announced

House of Night, which is a series of nine vampire novels, is heading to the big screen.

Producers Michael Birnbaum and Jeremiah Chechik have used their own coin to option screen rights to the "House of Night," a series of nine young adult novels by P.C. Cast and Kristin Cast.

The series, published by St. Martin's Griffin, just reached its fourth installment with the recently released "Untamed."

"House of Night" takes the vampire myth in a "Harry Potter"-esque direction. In the series, "vampyres" are accepted in society; they possess a genetic anomaly that manifests itself in some people at puberty. Vampyres are "marked" and sent to the House of Night, a school that offers training necessary to become an adult vampyre.

Protag is Zoey Redbird, whose ordinary life is thrown into disarray when she becomes a vampyre and must change schools and enter a brand new world.

"P.C. and Kristin Cast created a thrilling world that juxtaposes teen drama with supernatural suspense, using the transition from human to vampire as a metaphor for the transition from adolescence to adulthood," Birnbaum said.

Birnbaum produced "John Tucker Must Die" and is developing "Art Con" with Michael Douglas and Chechik; Chechik's directing credits include "Benny and Joon," and he most recently helmed and produced ESPN series "The Bronx Is Burning."

Prostitutes Strangled By Journalist in 'Hades'

Warner Bros. has acquired the John Leake book Entering Hades and has attached Robert Schwentke to direct the adaptation. The book, published late last year by Farrar, Straus & Giroux, is about Jack Unterweger, a journalist who led a double life strangling prostitutes in Vienna and Los Angeles, and covering his own crimes in the early 1990s. Unterweger hanged himself after receiving a life sentence. "Robert, Richard and I want to do a movie that is more than a dark serial killer story," Cooper said. "This is about the power of celebrity, and what happens when this sociopath goes to Los Angeles, a city that is the prototype for reinvention."

King & Straub's Talisman Adapted for Graphic Novel

Del Rey, an imprint of Ballantine Books at the Random House Publishing Group, announced today the acquisition of the comic book and graphic novel rights to The Talisman by Stephen King and Peter Straub.

The creative team on the project will be announced soon, and the first issue of the monthly comic is planned for late summer/early fall 2009.

Originally published in 1984, The Talisman is the story of a young teen named Jack Sawyer, who can save his dying mother only by retrieving a magical talisman. To find it he must cross back and forth between our world and the frightening and dangerous landscape of its "twinner" counterpart. The hardcover edition, published by Viking, spent 12 weeks in the #1 slot on the New York Times list. Both The Talisman and its sequel, Black House, are in print with Ballantine Books.

Television rights to The Talisman are under development by Steven Spielberg and Kathleen Kennedy.

"Illustrating The Talisman in the depth that it deserves will involve at least 24 issues of comics, probably more," said Del Rey Editor in Chief, Betsy Mitchell, who acquired the project from agent Ralph Vicinanza. "It's a tremendously visual story, filled with images that burn in memory long after the book has been closed."

King's Dark Tower comics (published through Marvel) consistently inhabit the top of the comic book sales charts, and his recent series, Dark Tower: Long Road Home was the top-selling comic book in North America in March 2008.

The Brøken Trailer

After Dark Horrorfest 3 is quickly approaching and as a result some of the films booked for this years festival are starting to step into the light a little bit. One film booked for ADHF 3 is called The Brøken from Writer/Director Sean Ellis. The trailer has hit the internet and I must say it looks pretty interesting. I did a little searching and found some festival reviews that give me hope for this one being a good Hitchcockian thriller.

The Brøken follows Gina who thinks she sees herself drive past in her own car on a busy street in London. Stunned by this strange event, Gina follows the mystery woman up to her apartment. From here, events take an eerie turn for the worse until Gina's awareness slides from solid reality into a world that will haunt more than just her nightmares. The film stars Lena Heady(300), Richard Jenkins(Burn After Reading), and Ulrich Thompson.

IGN scored the trailer for The Uninvited, the PG-13 remake of Kim Jee-Woon's original Janghwa, Hongryeon (A Tale of Two Sisters). If Dreamworks' version, which is directed by Charles and Thomas Guard, is keeping with the original, The Uninvited centers around two sisters (Anna and Alex), both freshly released from a mental ward. See Gaiman on 'Graveyard' Tour

Neil Gaiman, the prolific mind behind such novels as American Gods and Anansi Boys, and such comics as Marvel 1602 and Sandman, is touring in support of his new novel The Graveyard Book. With each city he visits, he’ll read a new chapter from his book, and they’re all being filmed! To check the tour schedule, hit up Neil's Tour Section!

Gaiman's new novel, "The Graveyard Book," takes place in a cemetery, where an orphaned boy is raised by a vampire, a werewolf and a witch. The seed for the idea was planted some 25 years ago, Gaiman says, when he was living in his native England and would take his young son Michael to ride his tricycle in a nearby cemetery, since there was no real garden or yard at home.

Inspiration struck. Gaiman thought he could write a book similar to Rudyard Kipling's classic "The Jungle Book," about a child adopted by wild animals. Instead, Gaiman would write about a child "who is adopted by dead people and taught all the things that dead people know."

'Dying Breed' Poster Banned in Australia

A new one sheet for the Australian horror film Dying Breed has been rejected as too gruesome to hang on bus shelters, according to The Daily Telegraph. Starring Nathan Phillips (Wolf Creek) and Leigh Whannell (Saw), the thriller was inspired by cannibal convict Alexander Pearce - known as The Pieman because he baked pies for a living in Ireland prior to being deported to a penal colony in Tasmania. The inspiration shines through in the poster, which can be viewed by reading on.

The tongue-in-cheek poster, designed by the LaB Sydney, features a meat pie that has been split open to reveal its stomach-churning contents.

"It's disappointing and frustrating to have the poster censored by Adshel (the company that specialises in bus shelter advertising)," writer-producer Michael Boughen said.

"The poster will be seen in cinema foyers, press ads and online, so it's going to be in the public domain."

"Dying Breed is an Australian film fighting to be noticed in a crowded marketplace and we wanted to stand out from the crowd."

Dying Breed opens in Australia on November 6. Check out the official website for more info or click the banned poster below for more images.

HBO orders second season of 'True Blood'

HBO has renewed Alan Ball's vampire drama "True Blood" after only two episodes.

"Blood" debuted Sept. 7 on the premium network to a modest 1.4 million viewers. But the debut has attracted a total of 4 million viewers with repeat airings. Also, HBO noted the second episode grew 24%.

"We're in a business where we have to believe in the show -- and the show is fantastic," said Michael Lombardo, president of HBO's programming group and West Coast operations. "It gets better in every episode. The show deserves a second year whatever the ratings."

The early pickup also sends a reassuring message to fans, Lombardo noted. "It says, 'It's OK to get hooked on the show, it's coming back.' "

Fans also won't have to wait very long. Season 2 will air next summer (yet another reason for the early pickup), part of HBO's plan to return to year-round programming on Sunday nights.

"Last couple years our volume of Sunday night series went down, and we're hoping to have a distinctive night of series on for 52 weeks a year next year," Lombardo said. "Our intention is not to have periods where we're not delivering originals."

The Thing Prequel

Strike Entertainment has now confirmed that it is working on a prequel to the film "The Thing".

Partner Marc Abraham told Latino Review: "This is more of a prequel than a sequel. ... It's goiing to be taking place in the same time frame. These are the events leading up to the 1982 film."

One can assume, the film would be focusing on events surrounding the Norwegian base which was overrun by the Thing prior to the events of Carpenter's remake.
