'Dying Breed' Poster Banned in Australia

A new one sheet for the Australian horror film Dying Breed has been rejected as too gruesome to hang on bus shelters, according to The Daily Telegraph. Starring Nathan Phillips (Wolf Creek) and Leigh Whannell (Saw), the thriller was inspired by cannibal convict Alexander Pearce - known as The Pieman because he baked pies for a living in Ireland prior to being deported to a penal colony in Tasmania. The inspiration shines through in the poster, which can be viewed by reading on.

The tongue-in-cheek poster, designed by the LaB Sydney, features a meat pie that has been split open to reveal its stomach-churning contents.

"It's disappointing and frustrating to have the poster censored by Adshel (the company that specialises in bus shelter advertising)," writer-producer Michael Boughen said.

"The poster will be seen in cinema foyers, press ads and online, so it's going to be in the public domain."

"Dying Breed is an Australian film fighting to be noticed in a crowded marketplace and we wanted to stand out from the crowd."

Dying Breed opens in Australia on November 6. Check out the official website for more info or click the banned poster below for more images.

HBO orders second season of 'True Blood'

HBO has renewed Alan Ball's vampire drama "True Blood" after only two episodes.

"Blood" debuted Sept. 7 on the premium network to a modest 1.4 million viewers. But the debut has attracted a total of 4 million viewers with repeat airings. Also, HBO noted the second episode grew 24%.

"We're in a business where we have to believe in the show -- and the show is fantastic," said Michael Lombardo, president of HBO's programming group and West Coast operations. "It gets better in every episode. The show deserves a second year whatever the ratings."

The early pickup also sends a reassuring message to fans, Lombardo noted. "It says, 'It's OK to get hooked on the show, it's coming back.' "

Fans also won't have to wait very long. Season 2 will air next summer (yet another reason for the early pickup), part of HBO's plan to return to year-round programming on Sunday nights.

"Last couple years our volume of Sunday night series went down, and we're hoping to have a distinctive night of series on for 52 weeks a year next year," Lombardo said. "Our intention is not to have periods where we're not delivering originals."

Strike Entertainment has now confirmed that it is working on a prequel to the film "The Thing".

Partner Marc Abraham told Latino Review: "This is more of a prequel than a sequel. ... It's goiing to be taking place in the same time frame. These are the events leading up to the 1982 film."

One can assume, the film would be focusing on events surrounding the Norwegian base which was overrun by the Thing prior to the events of Carpenter's remake.

Horde of chuckies invade Time Square

A horde of actors dressed as horror icon Chucky ran amok in Times Square yesterday to promote an upcoming Child’s Play film.

Passersby gawked, laughed and sneered at the six fully-grown flame-haired ‘dolls’ who crossed roads and stalked street corners brandishing butcher’s knives.

Each Chucky wore the horror film character’s trademark blue dungarees and striped long-sleeve T-shirt.

The eye-catching stunt was designed to promote the release of Child's Play, Chucky's 20th Birthday Edition DVD.

The extras-filled MGM re-release is a cleaned-up widescreen version of the 1988 cult horror hit. According to previews, the film will be presented as more of a mystery-slash-commentary on consumerism than your average horror-slash-horror.

Disturbia Film Faces Lawsuit

A lawsuit claims that Steven Spielberg, DreamWorks and Paramount Pictures copied a short story that was the basis for the Alfred Hitchcock movie “Rear Window” when they made the thriller “Disturbia.” The copyright-infringement suit was filed on Monday in Manhattan by the estate of Sheldon Abend, which owns the rights to the 1942 Cornell Woolrich story on which the movie is based. The suit says that the makers of “Disturbia” should have obtained film rights to the story. “Disturbia” stars Shia LaBeouf, whose character spies on his neighbors, including a man he suspects is a serial killer.

Project Origin Adds F.E.A.R.

The software developers of F.E.A.R owned the rights to the characters and world of the original game, whereas publisher Sierra owned the name.

When Monolith was bought by publisher WB Games and with talk of Sierra making its own game under the F.E.A.R. 2 name, Monolith had a competition to name the sequel, and Project Origin was the clear winner.

Sierra's parent company, Vivendi Games, merged with Activision - effectively retiring Sierra. WB Games picked up the rights Sierra held according to IGN. This means they can now brand the game under the F.E.A.R. title. The newly announced release date sees the PC, 360, and PS3 versions all shipping simultaneously on February 10th next year.

The winning competition name is being kept as a subtitle, making the full title of the game now F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin.

Michael Crichton Westworld to be Remade

Warner Brothers has assigned Billy Ray to write the remake of the sci-fi classic “Westworld”, originally written and directed by Michael Crichton in 1973 starring Richard Benjamin, James Brolin and Yul Brynner.

The story follows two guests into an adult themed futuristic theme park that is staffed entirely by lifelike robots. Unfortunately for the guests, the park malfunctions, creating cold-blooded killer robots.

Quentin Tarantino was recently asked to direct the remake, but he declined.

In a recent interview with Sci-Fi Wire, Billy Ray explains “I love the basic idea of the movie, which is that our amusements can kill us,” he says. “I also think the movie provides a great platform for exploring how sometimes machines can behave like humans while humans can sometimes behave like machines.”

FRIGHT NIGHT Screening In LA Sept. 19th!

Below is the full press release for the upcoming FRIGHT NIGHT screening at the Nuart on September 19th!

80s HORROR HIT “FRIGHT NIGHT” CAST AND CREW REUNITE FOR MIDNIGHT SCREENING

FIRST LOS ANGELES GROUP APPEARANCE SINCE 1985

September 8th, 2008- "Fright Night", the quintessential 80’s horror-comedy, will have its first Los Angeles cast and crew reunion on Friday, September 19th, Midnight at the Landmark’s Nuart Theatre, 11272 Santa Monica Boulevard, West Los Angeles.

“Fright Night” writer-director Tom Holland (“Child’s Play”) will be joined by the film’s stars Chris Sarandon (“Dog Day Afternoon”), William Ragsdale (“Living Proof”), Stephen Geoffreys (“Heaven Help Us”), and Jonathan Stark (“According to Jim”). Composer Brad Fiedel (“Terminator” and “Terminator 2: Judgment Day”) and Academy Award winning special effects artist Randall Cook (“The Lord of the Rings” trilogy) will also reunite with the film’s cast and creator.

Released on August 2, 1985, “Fright Night” opened to strong theatrical business and has since achieved cult status, as evidenced by a recent revival screening presented by Oscar-winning screenwriter Diablo Cody (“Juno”) at L.A.’s New Beverly Cinema. The upcoming Midnight Screening at the Nuart will mark the first time that the film’s writer-director, cast and crew have reunited for a Los Angeles screening. Fans can expect a brief introduction, post-show Q&A, and the rare opportunity to personally meet and have mementos signed by the creative team behind this vampire classic.

Said Holland, "I'm delighted to be able to get together with all the great folks who made this picture with me almost twenty-four years ago here in Los Angeles. And it’s great for us to be able to meet for an actual screening of the movie, with the faithful audience who’s turned it into something of a cult movie, and all at a classic Los Angeles movie house -- the Nuart. I'm looking forward to having our “Fright Night” family back together, getting to see the movie again with them, and meeting our extended fan family as well. I think there will be lots of laughs and maybe even a chill or two."

Writer-director Tim Sullivan (“2001 Maniacs”) will host the event in conjunction with horror website IconsofFright.com. Seizing the historic occasion of the reunion, Sullivan will record an exclusive audio commentary track for the film with the cast and filmmakers before the screening, which will be made available as a free download via Sullivan’s “Shock N Roll” web column at www.IconsOfFright.com.

Said Sullivan, "Fright Night” is a definitive horror film from the 1980s, a true time capsule of its era that’s also a valentine to the vampire movies of the 50s and 60s, and the TV horror hosts of the 70s who kept them alive for little monsters like Tom Holland and me to discover on late night television. As a die-hard fan long disappointed with the film's "bare bones" DVD release, I’m thrilled to help preserve the film’s history by offering fans this exclusive audio commentary. Much like the iconic bloodsuckers in the film, Tom Holland's “Fright Night” will simply not die."

Ramis Updates 'Ghostbusters 3' Possibilities

Harold Ramis responds to this past weeks Ghostbusters 3 announcement over at the Chicago Tribune. Inside you can read about the possibilities of Harold Ramis, Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd and Ernie Hudson all returning, along with Sony's hopes to bring in the Apatow crew.

Ramis tells the Chicago Tribune:

"yes, columbia is developing a script for GB3 with my year one writing partners, gene stupnitsky and lee eisenberg. judd apatow is co-producing year one and has made several other films for sony, so of course the studio is hoping to tap into some of the same acting talent. aykroyd, ivan reitman and i are consulting at this point, and according to dan, bill murray is willing to be involved on some level. he did record his dialogue for the new ghostbusters video game, as did danny and i, and ernie hudson. the concept is that the old ghostbusters would appear in the film in some mentor capacity. not much else to say at this point. everyone is confident a decent script can be written and i guess we'll take it from there.
best,
harold"

Carmody plans 3-D project Evil Dead: The Musical

Producer Don Carmody and partners are in negotiations with Spiderman director Sam Raimi to bring to the screen the musical version of the former horror meister's Evil Dead films, Evil Dead: The Musical.

Conceived by George Reinblatt, Christopher Bond, Frank Cipolla and Melissa Morris, the camp stage interpretation of Raimi’s cult classic horror trilogy was originally mounted in Toronto and Montreal and has since gone off-Broadway.

Original directors Bond and choreographer Hinton Battle are lined up to co-direct the film version, which will be presented in 3-D. Carmody told Screen International he hopes to shoot the film in the spring of next year in Toronto with some of the original cast. However, he adds, serious rights issues still need to be resolved.

Carmody has been working on the project with Bill Franzblau and Jeffrey Latimer, the producers of the theatrical musical, in which Carmody was an investor.

Featuring songs such as “I’m Not A Killer” and “Look Who’s Evil Now”, the stage version featured an audience-participation area known as the “splatter zone”.

Presumably the 3-D will yield similar if less sticky results.

Meanwhile, Carmody begins principal photography September 29 on All Saints Day, the sequel to The Boondock Saints.

JJ Abrams Dark Tower Movie Updates

Damon Lindeloff and J.J. Abrams are adapting Stephen Kings 7 book series The Dark Tower into a feature film and from our friends at MovieBlog we get a quote from Damon Lindeloff on the projects progress;

The Dark Tower is to me every bit as daunting an adaptation as the Lord of the Rings trilogy must have been for Peter Jackson, except we’ve got seven books we’re looking at. And the idea of doing that at the same time Carlton and I are bringing Lost to a close is simply not viable.

There are always Dark Tower conversations, but the figuring out of what this will look like as a movie has not begun. If The Dark Tower were in the right hands, I would love to see seven movies executed just right. But you have to get people to see the first one to get them to come and see the second one.

3-D 'My Bloody Valentine' Details

3-D in the IMax age has come a long, long way, and in an interview with MTV, actress Jaime King spilled the beans about Patrick Lussier's upcoming 3-D "My Bloody Valentine" remake.

"Normal HD is 2000 [pixels], [My Bloody Valentine 3-D] is shot at 4000, and it's done with 3D, so it's not like random things flying at you," she told MTV. "It's literally the whole thing...you're in the movie. Lionsgate's doing a great job of being involved with these films that are really taking it to the next level, so I'm really excited about that."

"Valentine" is hitting screens January 16.

Ghostbusters 3 Officially Announced!

The studio has set "The Office" co-exec producers Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky to write a script for a film designed to bring back together the original cast of Harold Ramis, Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd and Ernie Hudson.

Studio would not comment on the development and has been mum on recent rumors that there was interest in making another installment of the franchise.

The scribes just wrote "Year One," a comedy that was directed by Ramis. Ramis with Aykroyd wrote the first two installments of the films. Ivan Reitman directed both the 1984 original and the sequel that was released in 1989. The close proximity between the writers and original Ghostbuster Ramis is evidence that the ghost chasers have sparked to the idea of returning.

"Ghostbusters" was Columbia's highest grossing film ever, until it was beaten by "Men in Black" and then "Spider-Man." An attempt to make a third installment of the franchise was stymied in the dealmaking stage. Sources said so much gross was pledged to the participants that it was next to impossible for the studio to make any money on a third installment.

No deals will be made with the original cast until the script is ready, but the gross percentage will certainly be an issue. Sony has a standing policy not to allow more than 25% of first dollar gross out the door.

The scribes, who are Emmy- nominated for their work on "The Office," just set up another picture at Columbia, selling their spec script "Bad Teacher" to the studio for Jimmy Miller to produce.
